Early Fall Tips For a Healthy Lawn

August - September

  • Set your mower blade to it's highest setting, about 3 inches is ideal
  • Use your soil test recommendations to determine if your lawn needs fertilizer, now is the best time to apply
  • No soil test? Apply no more than 2 lbs of nitrogen per 1000 square feet of lawn, and use phosphorous-free fertilizer.

It's Easy to Reduce Your Use of Lawn Chemicals

  1. Fertilize? - Mow high and just leave the clippings on the lawn. If you have to fertilize ask for phosphorus free and use these recommendations.
  2. Got Weeds? - Try spreading perennial reygrass on your lawn. Repeat as needed throughout the growing season.
  3. Got Bugs or Plant Diseases? - Visit the UMCE Pest Management Office Homeowner Page or call their experts at 581-3880.
  4. "Weed and Feed?" - Avoid combination products that contain both fertilizers and pesticides. Keep an eye on packaging some mulches even contain pesticides.
